You might not have seen JD Souther in performance, but you certainly heard a lot of his songs. The prolific singer-songwriter, who died Tuesday aged 78, wrote and co-wrote the soundtrack of the 70s and 80s. His long collaborations with The Eagles and Linda Ronstadt produced classics like “You’re Only Lonely”, “New Kid in Town”, “Faithless Love”, “Best of my Love”, “Run Like a Thief”, “White Rhythm and Blues” and a pile of others.
Souther was happy
being the writer and backup singer. Although he did perform both solo and as
part of The Souther-Hillman-Furay Band. Someone asked him later in life if he
didn’t feel put out by other artists making a big splash with his songs. He
said he wanted to tell them, “Shall I show you the checks?”
Cause of his death
has not been released, but it must have been unexpected. He was scheduled to
begin a new tour this coming Tuesday.
I knew him mostly via
Ronstadt, so I’m giving you her cover of “Prisoner in Disguise”. Souther sings
harmony with her and it is magic.
